S. Ileana Lindstrom, PhD

Dr. Ileana Lindstrom - licensed psychologist in Chestertown Maryland

I am a licensed psychologist in the State of Maryland, providing psychotherapy with adults, individually and in groups, and trauma-informed consultation with  institutions, agencies, and organizations that have experienced negative effects of traumatic events. I am also an ordained Lutheran pastor (retired), having served Lutheran and Episcopal congregations in urban and rural areas for 12 years. I received training in the dismantling of racism using the tools of consciousness raising, education, advocacy, and activism beginning in the 1980s through the justice teaching group, Huperetai: A Life-Liberating Alliance, and more recently with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond. The training I received in community organizing through the Industrial Areas Foundation enriches my work, enabling me to develop leadership skills in individuals and groups that can help to promote social and racial equity.

In 2005, I experienced a strong interest and desire to enrich my ministry with an emphasis on healing. I love the work of providing people with the support and guidance that are often needed to improve their health and wellness! I returned to school and earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. In April 2017, I became a licensed psychologist in the State of Maryland.

As a healer, the people whom I have served have struggled with a range of problems and many experienced psychological trauma. My training in psychology occurred in a wide range of clinical contexts, including a city-based child guidance clinic for adjudicated youth; community mental health clinics serving young children, adolescents, and adults from urban, suburban, and rural communities; and a private psychiatric hospital located in an urban center in which I provided treatment for adults with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociative identity disorder, and other serious mental illnesses. My current clinical practice is, of course, informed by all of these experiences which have equipped me to be acutely aware of and responsive to the interrelationships among health, mental health, human development, relationships, race, culture, and community contexts.
